Your 11-12 year old will be able to read and compare different texts such as multi-modal form, imaginative or persuasive and understand how this format changes the way ideas are put forward.
 
11-12 year olds can comprehend layered text
Your child will be able to identify multiple purposes within a text. As texts become more complex they will often contain more than one purpose.
 
11-12 year olds can apply their knowledge of visual literacy
Your child will be able to use her knowledge of visual literacy to evaluate how information that is read differs to how visual images on the same topic are interpreted.
 
11-12 year olds can understand how others can read texts
Your child can now understand how someone’s own personal experience can alter how a text is interpreted.  They can also interpret a text to create an unbiased and accurate summary which represents a summarised account of the main ideas located within the text.
 
Reading Processes
Your child can now read for a substantial amount of time (more than 30 minutes) using effective strategies to maintain meaning of what they have read and learnt.
Your child will also now be reading more demanding texts that have lots more technical terms and theoretical concepts.
They will begin to become increasingly more independent in their reading and chose a wide range of literal, factual and multi modal texts.
Your child should also be capable of engaging with a wide range of authentic texts for example newspapers, TV documentaries, letters and websites.
 
Tips for parents
Make reading a priority in your household and encourage your child to read and choose texts which interest them.
Nurture their interest in technology and reading by encouraging your child to check out online book reviews, author’s websites, fan pages or forums.
Expose your child to a wide range of genres that are age appropriate.
If your child is a reluctant reader, choose funny and humorous books such as "diary of a wimpy kid by Jeff Kinney. Keep reading to your children- you’re never too old to share the magic of reading.
