When it comes to arts and crafts, there are a number of things you can make that are easy, fun and, in some cases, pretty useful. So today, why not put some old newspapers, card papers and spare string to good use and some fun with your toddler.

Here are three different types of hats you can make with your little one that are easy, quick and simple.

The classic boat hat
This is really good to make with little fingers as it doesn’t require cutting or gluing.

What you’ll need
1 sheet newspaper – broad sheet from the middle

Method
  1. Lay the sheet of newspaper down on a flat surface, folded in half widthways. Fold again lengthways down the centre to get the centre point.
  2. Working lengthways, fold the top two corners down to the centre of the paper.  Depending on the size of your paper you will be left with about 3 inches at the end of the paper.
  3. Fold one side in half and again until it reaches the triangle.
  4. Do the same on the other side.
  5. Open it up and you will end up with a triangular hat.
Princess cone hat
This is a  great one to make with little girls.

What you’ll need:
1 large A3 sized sheet of card paper
Sellotape
1 length of ribbon to secure hat to head
Various lengths of fabric
Stapler
Markers to decorate

Method
  1. Pull the two top corners of the paper together and pull until it is in a cone shape. Secure with a piece of tape.
  2. Punch two holes on either side of the cone and thread the ribbon through - this will help keep it on your child’s head. If the hat fits snugly without it you can skip this part.
  3. Staple the fabric pieces to the top of the cone.
  4. Using the markers, let your little one decorate the hat.

King’s crown
A great one for little boys.

What you’ll need:
1 sheet of yellow card paper – long enough so that it fits around your child’s head
Pencil
Scissors
Sellotape
Stickers (optional)
Bobbles (optional)

Method:
Lay the paper down flat and draw the outline of the top of a crown.
Use the scissors to cut it out and throw away the scraps.
Roll the hat into a circular shape until it fits snugly on your child’s head. Secure with tape.
Let your toddler decorate using the stickers and bobbles
You are sure to have lots of fun playing with these hats all day long.
