A postmortem will be carried out later today on the body of a young boy who was discovered in an apartment in Limerick yesterday.

The toddler's body was found at an address on Parnell St. and the child was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency services alerted police to the tragic circumstances, with a Garda spokesman saying: "Gardai from Roxboro Road are investigating the circumstances of the death of a boy at an apartment in Limerick at 4.30 pm. Emergency services were called to the apartment and the boy was pronounced dead at the scene."

The body was taken to University Hospital Limerick where a postmortem to determine the cause of death will be carried out today.
