Whether you are moving country or simply moving to another town, it can be hard for your little one to comprehend what is actually happening.

Here are a few tips to help make it that bit easier on them:

Discuss it
Make sure you sit down and discuss what is happening with them. Simply telling them that you are moving won’t make it any easier, so set aside time in the day to have a proper chat about it. This way you can relieve any fears or apprehensions that they may have about the move.

Inform them
When it comes to telling big kids that you are moving, you must keep in mind their age. Give them as much information as possible so that they feel secure and aren’t going into the unknown. Answer their questions truthfully. For example, if there is no one their age there make sure you tell them and the same goes if they have to move school.

Involve them
Make sure you involve your kids in what is happening. If possible, involve them in house hunting or packing items away. If you have already bought the house, take your kisd to visit it before moving day. Let them pick their own room, explore the house and have a play in the garden. This way it won’t be a huge surprise come moving day. Go explore the neighbourhood if possible.

Get them excited
Get your kids excited about the new move so it becomes more about a new adventure than leaving friends and family behind. Give them a notebook to collect addresses and numbers off their friends  and talk about the fun of having a penpal.

The right time to move
To make it easier on your little one, try to avoid moving half way through the year. This is to avoid them any unnecessary upheaval and they will have a chance to get to know other kids during the summer before starting school.

Packing
Try to involve your little one in the packing. Avoid doing too much of it while they are asleep as they may get a bit of a fright when they wake up in the morning. Keep favourite toys out and give them their own box to pack. Encourage them to colour the box in if possible.
