A nursery school, which was rated ‘outstanding’ after their inspection in July 2014, has admitted to leaving a small child alone in a nearby wood.

Fordfield House Nursery in Ampthill, Bedfordshire reported the incident to Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills) in December and apologised to the parents; however, they have refused to confirm the age of the child or say how long they were left alone.

From what is known, nursery staff left the child behind after a supervised walk through local woodlands. The child was then found by someone from a nearby riding stables, who returned them to the nursery.

In a statement, the nursery said: "We made our parents and Ofsted fully aware at that time and they rigorously inspected the nursery and investigated.

"We complied and worked with the inspection team immediately and, as a result, we have put improved and effective changes in place to make our nursery even better than it was.

"We have apologised unreservedly to our parents."

An Ofsted spokesman told the BBC that they have issued the nursery with "compliance action,” to ensure nursery officials "identify the steps to be taken to remove [and] minimise and manage... risks and hazards".

"All outings have been stopped until relevant policies and procedures have been amended and fully implemented within the nursery," said Ofsted in its report.
