Promoting literacy in 5-8 year olds

There are lots of things that you can do to help your child enhance their literacy skills. Here are some of our tried and tested tips:

 

Play word games together that encourage children to learn sounds:

For example, play a game of ‘I spy’.

 

Rhyme together:

Ask your child to tell you what words rhyme with car, dog, cat, house etc...

 

Talk about what TV programmes your child is watching:

You can ask her to tell you about the plot line and the characters in the TV show.

 

Talk about the past together:

Ask your child to tell you about something he enjoyed doing in school that week.

 

Talk about the future:

Talk to your child about what you are all going to do as a family the next day or on the weekend. Ask her to tell you what she needs to do before she goes to bed.
