There have been some quite disturbing stories released in recent times, documenting the shocking treatment of children at the hands of those in positions of power, and this latest report has sent shockwaves through a US community.

A school security officer and a county sheriff’s office have been sued for putting two young schoolchildren in handcuffs.

The incident came to light after footage emerged showing a boy, 8, and a girl, 9, struggling with handcuffs placed around their biceps, their arms locked behind their backs.

Both children have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and a resource officer is heard telling them: “You don’t get to swing at me like that. You can do what we’ve asked you to, or you can suffer the consequences.”

The official court documents reveal that the little boy was taken out of class for not following the teacher’s directions. After attempting to leave the principal’s office he was physically restrained, and he was later handcuffed after trying to hit a member of staff with his elbow.

According to the report, the little girl was in isolation and was handcuffed for “trying to injure school staff”.

Kentucky state law bans schools from physically restraining students known to suffer from conditions such as ADHD.

In response to the lawsuit, legal representation for the security officer involved said that he restrained the children because “they were placing themselves and other people in danger of harm and that's what the book says to do”.

We will keep you updated on the case as it progresses.
