There is nothing more frustrating than when your child desperately needs a haircut but they absolutely refuse to get one. Even if it is just a trim, some kids, both boys and girls, will stamp their feet, have a tantrum, slam doors and give out at the slight mention of the hairdressers.

If this sounds like your strong-willed youngster, the following tips should help you get your little one to the chair happy and keen.

Bring them with you

Go to the hairdressers to get your own hair done and bring your little one with you. This way they can see what is going on and get used the sounds and bustle that come with a trip to the salon.

Ask what the problem is

It could simply be that your youngster likes their long hair or they could genuinely have a fear of going to the salon. Make sure you sit down with them and calmly ask why they won’t go. By keeping your tone relaxed and casual, your little one will hopefully open up and you will be able to alleviate their fear.

Compromise with them

As your child gets older, they will develop their own sense of style and they might see a trip to the hairdressers as something that will jeopardise their look - yes, even an eight-year-old can become stubborn about their appearance. If this is the case, meet in the middle with a cut that will satisfy both of you.

Let them bring a comforter

If it is fear causing your little one to refuse to step into the salon, let them bring a comforter with them like their favourite teddy or blanket as a way of helping them feel more secure and relaxed.

Talk about it as being a part of growing up

If your little one is anything like ours they’ll love nothing more than feeling and acting grown up, so use this to your advantage. Make sure they know that a hair cut is a normal part of life and that it is a sign that they are getting older.
