St. Patrick's Day is sometimes associated with drunkenness and "drowning the shamrock" but if planned right, can be a great family activity.

Take advantage of the kids being off school to plan a fun activity for everyone.

Here are seven fun ways you can celebrate the day with your family- leprechaun hats optional!

1. Catch a parade

There are loads of parades all over the country and the kids will love all the floats and crazy costumes.

If you are going to a busy parade with young kids and are worried they won't be able to cope with the crowds, see if you can watch it from a friend's apartment.

2. Dress all in green

Don your favourite shade of green and get the kids to match you. They'll love the novelty of it.

If they don't have many green items of clothing, get creative with accessories, socks, hair bobbles and jewellery.

Take a photo of the whole family together, it will be a lovely memory.

3. Paint their faces

Get out the face paints and get creative.

Let them paint each other's faces and see what they come up with.

Shamrocks, harps, Irish flags and pots of gold are all great ideas.

4. Dress your little one up as a leprechaun

If you have a baby who isn't quite old enough to understand the celebration, you can still include them.

You can buy little leprechaun onesies and costumes in Penneys at this time of the year for your little one.

They will look so adorable!

5. Learn about the history of St. Patrick

You can teach your kids the history behind the special day by taking them on a day out to one of the places associated with the saint.

Otherwise you could find a book and read them the story of St. Patrick, and ask them to draw pictures afterwards.

6. Make decorations

The kids will be off school for the day and one of the best ways to amuse them is art and craft activities.

All they need is some coloured paper, glue, glitter, markers and imagination.

Check out this video for some cool ideas.

7. Make green treats

Kids LOVE food dye so stock up on some green food dye.

You can make green cookies, cupcakes or whatever takes your fancy.

You can use green veggies and carrots to make healthy treats also.
