What is causing my weird pregnancy dreams?

Dreams are a succession of ideas, emotions, images and sensations that occur involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep.   It is not unusual for your dreams to be strange and sometimes weird during your pregnancy. Your sleep is being disturbed with frequent trips to the toilet, indigestion and as your pregnancy progresses, the eternal quest for a comfortable sleeping position. Breaking your sleep means there is more opportunity to dream as you fall back asleep.

Your weird dreams, are often because you are excited and nervous at pregnancy and your impending arrival. It’s also because there is increased progesterone is flowing through your veins. Dreams normally reflect reality which means they bring your happiness and concerns together to create your strange dreams.

Common issues that may be connected to your dreams during pregancy include:
  • Anxiety about birth and motherhood
  • Self-consciousness about your changing body
  • Awareness of your amniotic fluid (dreams involving water)
  • Interest in the mother-baby connection
  • Worrying about your partners love, commitment and attraction to you
  • Predicting your baby's sex
  • Picturing your baby's face
  • Choosing your baby's name
  • Taking responsibility as a parent
There is nothing that you can do about your dreams but if you do have something on your mind that is causing you worry or concern, speak to your doctor about it.
