You asked

What types of childcare service are there?

When it comes to the type of child care service, parents in Ireland have five main types to choose from. These are:

Full day care, which includes crèches and nursery schools
Sessional preschools, such as Montessori groups, play groups and play schools
Childminders, who care for children in their own homes
Part time services, which offer the structure of crèches and other facilities, but for three and a half to five hours per day
Drop in services, as offered in shopping centres and hotels

Full day care is designed and intended for children of parents who work, and others, who require more than five hours of care per day.

Sessional services offer planned and structured services, based on a fixed type of curriculum (such as Montessori or Naíonraí) and are usually for three and a half to five hours, either in the morning or afternoon.

Childminders are people who care for children in their own homes. They may offer full or part time services, and the rates and terms of the arrangement are negotiated between the care giver and the parent directly.

Part time services offer the same service as a full day crèche or day care, but for three and a half to five hours per day.

Drop in services are used for not more than two hours, while a parent is attending an event, or using a service – it is a form of customer service to the parent.

One other type of child care service is available, and that is an overnight service – which would be used on the occasion that a parent is unable to care for a child at night. These services are usually for the hours between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. and are for more than two hours at a time.
