As your child gets older, don’t be surprised when they start to grow a fondness for a particular celebrity or pop star. However, while it is a pretty innocent act on your child’s part to idolise famous people you, as their mum, must keep them in check and not allow their obsession become all-consuming.

Don’t over acknowledge it
If your child comes home from school talking about the latest celebrity non-stop, don’t worry. As your youngster grows, they are going to look up to celebrities or stars rather than their parents. While you don’t need to ignore it, you shouldn’t over acknowledge it.

Talk to them
Talk to them about their idol and ask what it is about them that they like. No doubt, you will be given a response along the lines of “because the whole class likes them”. Engage them in conversation if they say they like the music or the movie they are in. You may be surprised to understand that their love of the celebrity is based not on the actual star but on what is going on around them, the movie they’re in or the song they sing.

When to say no
Don’t indulge their every request, not only will it cost you a fortune, it will also just add fuel to the fire. With their love of the latest celebrity growing, it is important to maintain a sense of balance when it comes to buying concert tickets, posers, CD’s and other items with the celebrity’s brand on it. While it is up to you as to how much you want to indulge them, always keep in mind their age.

Relate to it
Remember when you were obsessed with the latest heartthrob or teen idol? Well, jog that memory when it comes to your child’s idol. It probably didn’t last that long and involved little more than popping a few posters up on your wall.

Broaden their mind
When your child comes home raving about the latest popstar, try to introduce them to other bands and groups. Broadening their mind will help them realise that there is a world beyond their idol.

When to get worried
As long as your child is aware that the celebrity is not them and that they can’t turn into them, then you are fine. However, you should be concerned when they start to compare their appearance, especially their weight, with a famous person.
