What can I do if my child is being bullied?

If you find out that your child is being bullied then you need to take action. However, this is an emotional and sensitive time for the family and you need to approach this in a rational manner to fix the problem.  This can be difficult as more than likely you won’t be having a rational response. Here are some tips about what you should and shouldn’t do:

You should:
Rationally make sure to get the correct facts from your child
If the bullying is happening at school, you need to report it and work with the school to resolve the issue.  Most schools will have policies in place to effectively deal with bullying.
Speak to your child about ways to deal with bullying, encourage them to walk away, stay away from the bully and speak to a teacher.
Try to stay calm.

You should never:
Take matters into your hands or act in an irrational or impulsive manner
Encourage a child to fight back
Try to fix the problem by talking to the other child or his parents
Allow bullying to occur in your own home
