A 3-year-old boy accidentally shot both his parents in a hotel room in Albuquerque, New Mexico this weekend.

The tragic incident took place after the little boy discovered his mother's handgun in her handbag.

Firing off a shot, the 3-year-old hit his father in the lower backside. The bullet then exited the man's hip before hitting the pregnant mum in the shoulder.

Police have said that the child's father was treated and released from hospital, while the little boy's mum remains in a stable condition.

Unfortunately the condition of the unborn child is currently unknown.

The little boy's 2-year-old sister was also present at the time of the shooting, but thankfully neither child was harmed during the incident.

The children are currently under the care of the Children's Youth and Families department.

Upon reviewing the case, the Albuquerque District Attorney's Office will decide whether the parents in question can be charged with criminal negligence.

The cases of children gaining access to firearms appears to becoming more and more prevalent over recent weeks.
