Even though we are all in summer mode it doesn’t mean your kids need to put learning aside until they head back to class.

In fact, there are so many games to help your little one with maths and spelling that they’ll have no excuse not to learn a few new things in time for when September rolls around.

If your youngster is a geography fan, here are five games that will not only keep them amused but will teach them something new at the same time.

1. Guess the currency

You will need:

  • 10 small white cards
  • Blu tack
  • Black marker
  • A map of the world

Method:

  1. On each piece of card write down ten different currencies from across the globe – you can use less for younger kids. Stick the blu tack to the back of the card.
  2. Show your youngster a list with the currencies and which countries they belong to.
  3. Allow them five minutes to memorise which country they belong to.
  4. Next, ask them to stick the currency to the correct country on your map of the world.

2. Guess the city

You will need:

  • 10 small cards
  • Blu tack
  • Black marker
  • A map of the world

Method:

  1. Write down a different city on each piece of white card – you can use less for younger kids. Stick blu tack to the back of the card.
  2. Show your youngster a list with cities and the country they belong to. Allow them five minutes to memorise the list.
  3. Next, ask them to stick the card with a city on it to the correct country.

3. Match the flag

You will need:

  • Different flags from across the globe – you can make these with little pieces of card.
  • A map of the world

Method:

  1. Have your child guess where each flag belongs by placing the flag on top of the country.

4. Treasure hunt

You will need:

  • A piece of paper
  • Black marker
  • Compass

Method:

  1. On the piece of paper, mark out an 'X marks the spot' for where the kids have to find their treasure.
  2. Rather than using arrows, on the map write down which direction they have to walk in and how many steps they have to take.
  3. Allow them use the compass to find the treasure!

5. Read a map

You will need:

  • A map of your local area

Method:

  1. Assign a location that you want to go to like the park (choose a park you have never been to before).
  2. Give your kids the map and have them find the way to the park without any help from you.
  3. This is a great one to do when you’re walking together, although it works well in the car.
