As the summer approaches, many mums will be trying to figure out ways to get their kids to play outside. And considering the school holidays are expensive enough without having to pay for toys or entertainment, these six chalk games are ideal to keep the kids happy.

Cheap and easy to do, your little one is sure to spend hours outside playing.

What do you need:

  • Various coloured chalk
  • 1 stone
  • 1 bean bag (you can use a stone if you don't have one)
  • 1 ball

Games to play:

1. Hopscotch

This game has been around for years and it is just as much fun as when we played it.

Simply draw the hopscotch squares on the ground, mark them from one to ten and line the kids up. Taking it in turns, get one child to throw the stone at the squares, remembering to skip the square it lands on when they are jumping.

2. Target practice

This games works if you draw the targets on the ground or a wall.

If you are doing it on the ground, draw three circles in a line making them smaller the further away they are. Assign each with a  number and have the child throw the ball in the circle adding up the points on the way. If you are doing it on a wall, you can work with the same concept except put the targets further up on the wall.

3. Chalk dress up

This is a fun way for kids to really sue their imagination.

Get your child to lie down on the ground and, using the chalk, trace around their body, before asking them to move away. Get them to colour in the shape, telling them to be a s creative as possible.

4. Bean bag toss

This one works like target practice but slightly different.

On the ground draw a small circle about two feet wide. Around that circle draw a larger one and another larger one around that – like a dart board. Assign a number to each circle and get the kids to toss a bean bag, aiming it at the circle. Give each child two goes and add up the score where the bag lands. The winner is the one with the most scores.

5. Race track

This one is great if your little one is into cars and racing.  You will need two or more players.

Find a flat level outside and, using a piece of chalk, draw two race tracks on the ground – don’t forget your starting line. Give each player a car each and get them to line up at the start. They can either flick the toy with their finger or give it one strong push – the winner is the child whose car goes furthest.

6. Xs and Os

This one is simply to teach your child and all your need are two players.

Draw the Xs and Os template on the ground – two vertical lines with two horizontal lines crossing over them, creating nine equal sized squares. Toss a coin to see who goes first. The winner is the person who gets three square or circles in a line: vertically, horizontally or diagonally.
