Things to consider before letting your 4 year-old play sports.

Although your little four year-old might seem to be like a little sports star in the making, letting him play organized sports too early in life could have its disadvantages. As most four year-olds lack the ability to pay attention, focus on what they are doing, and also to follow rules, it is generally accepted that they are too young and still lack the physical and mental skills that are necessary for them to enjoy a game.

If your four year-old makes mistakes in front of a large crowd, this could lead to frustration and tears and could possibly put your child off sports for good. The thing to do at this stage is to allow your child, like most children of this age do, to hone his skills through play.

A minimum of one hour’s active time daily is recommended for children in this age group, so make sure that your child gets lots of backyard or playground play time. Clambering around on playground equipment or riding a bicycle works just as well as playing a game of catch.

When your child reaches elementary school, he will be more coordinated he will be ready for organized sports and a lot more enthusiastic about playing sports. As his personal interests and abilities progress, it will be easier to match him with a sport that suits him best.
