What causes ADHD?

The cause of ADHD is not fully known, but research has shown that in children who suffer from ADHD, certain areas of the brain work more slowly. Genetic factors are thought to be involved as ADHD does tend to run in families. Trauma to the head or complications at birth resulting in injuries to the brain have also been implicated in the development of ADHD, however this isn’t thought to be a common factor. Cigarette smoke and alcohol abuse during pregnancy may also be linked to children developing ADHD. Food allergies, excess sugar, poor home life and watching too much TV are not thought to be factors in the development of ADHD.
