Getting a nanny: what are the advantages and disadvantages?

Many parents believe that having a nanny is superior to using a crèche or an outside child minder.

Having a nanny in the home makes the day less stressful for both you and your children. You don’t have to worry about the daily pickups and drop-offs that are necessary for a crèche or a child minder. And, your time can be more flexible with a nanny in the home.

Many times, a nanny will become almost a part of the family and remain with the child throughout their younger years. This provides stability to a child and is reassuring to the working parent.

When you hire a nanny, your child will remain in their own environment which is comforting. Additionally, a child cared for at home will not be exposed to as many germs and will likely be sick less often.

Of course, as with all choices, there are some disadvantages to using a nanny as opposed to a crèche or child minder. The biggest disadvantage is that your child will not be interacting with other children on a regular basis. For some children, this interaction is needed to prepare them for going to school.

Additionally, a child that is cared for by a nanny may not have as structured of an environment as a child who is in a crèche.

Of course, if you are lucky enough to have the perfect nanny, these things won’t matter. A good nanny will plan regular outings where your child can interact with other children, and create a structured environment with set times for feeding and naps, as well as activities that are fun and educational.
