How can we make our garden safe for our child?

A garden area can pose several hazards to a toddler, but a few simple fixes will eliminate the dangers.

Many times, garden areas are located on balconies. Obviously, a balcony in itself poses a danger to a toddler. If your garden are is located on a balcony, make sure that vertical railings do not have openings larger than 20 cm. If they are larger, you can cover them with garden fencing, a shade cloth, or a sheet of clear plastic or Plexiglas. Alternatively, you can modify a vertical railing by adding extra rails to fill in the openings. Railings that are horizontal are enticing to a toddler who is learning to climb. Cover the inside of the railing with the same material.

If your balcony garden has an external stair that leads you down to the ground, you have to also childproof the stairs. Add a decorative gate to the top and bottom of the stairs and make sure that the gates have a childproof latch.

Should your balcony garden have patio furniture, it should be keep at a distance from any of the railings as a toddler will find a way to use it as a ladder to climb over the edge.
Any doors or windows that lead to your garden area should be equipped with childproof latches installed high enough that your toddler can reach them.

Lastly, no matter what the situation, nothing compares to close supervision.
