Weight problems can be difficult to resolve. It’s important to prevent the problem from happening in the first place. Here are some tips to help you keep your child at a healthy weight:
- Don't insist your child eat when he isn't hungry, it’s alright if not every meal gets finished.
- Don't use food as a way to comfort or as a reward.
- Don't offer dessert as a reward for finishing a meal, this reinforces the idea of sweets being more valuable than other foods.
- Offer your child a healthy and balanced diet. No more than 30 percent of all the calories your child eats should be fat calories.
- Only eat at fast-food restaurants as a very occasional treat.
- Limit how much TV your child watches. Instead, encourage your child to get active.
- Spend time being active with your child, go on a family cycling trip, a hill walk or play outdoor games together.
- Teach your child good eating and exercise habits that he will have for the rest of his life.
