Until the last several years, ‘organic food’ meant many different things depending on where you were or who grew the food. These days, there are more stringent requirements that allow foods to legally be called ‘organic’.
To classify a food as an organic food, the crops must not be sprayed with pesticides that contain toxins. Insects must be controlled with toxin-free methods such as natural pesticides and crop rotations.
The land that fruits and vegetables are grown on must have been organically farmed for the past three years. Livestock that produces organic meats must have access to the outdoors and cannot be given antibiotics. Additionally, genetically engineered (genetically modified) foods cannot be considered organic.
