You asked

When will I know if my child is gifted?

Most often, a child who is gifted will not be discovered until they enter school. However, some children will show signs of giftedness as early as 1 year of age. So, how do you know if your preschool age child may be gifted?

A child who is 2 to 4 years of age may be considered gifted if any of the following are true:
•    Shows a specific talent, such as the ability to draw realistic pictures, play a musical instrument, or they are a whiz at maths
•    Reaches developmental milestones significantly ahead of his peers
•    Can speak in complete sentences earlier than usual
•    Seems to never stop asking questions
•    Can concentrate for long periods of time on one task
•    Has a wild imagination
•    Memorises facts and easily recalls information that she has learned from books or television
There are also signs that have more to do with the child’s personality and temperament than their talent.

A young child who is gifted may start to feel that they are different from their peers and become withdrawn and isolated. A gifted child may also show a great deal of frustration because they think faster than they can express their thoughts.

If you feel that your child might be gifted, consider talking to care providers or teachers. Their input can help you determine if your child should be tested.
