At 31 months, what important developmental signs should I look out for?

At 31 months old, your child is becoming more and more aware of the world around him or her. For instance, your child is probably realising that the rules you set are a part of the adult world, and that sometimes, those rules are broken. If your child starts to question you after seeing a rule broken, explain that rules are flexible, but that it’s mummy and daddy who decide which rules apply, and when.

Children this age also start telling fibs. It’s important to realise though that even though your child may deny having done something, or even make up a ridiculous story, it’s not because he or she is being deliberately deceitful, or manipulative. It’s usually because your child wishes that he or she hadn’t done whatever it is, and if you encourage and reward telling the truth instead of making your child fearful, you should stop the lying problem.

If your child starts asking where babies come from (common at this age, especially if you or someone you know happen to be pregnant) try to avoid too much detail. Answering that babies grow inside mummies, and adding that they live in a place called a uterus is enough. Too much detail can be scary for children at this age.

Last, but not least, you may notice that your 31 month old starts altering his or her speech, depending on who your child is talking to. The tone and vocabulary will change depending on who your child is talking to, for instance, with younger children, you may notice your child speaking slower, and using smaller words.
