Child Protection Service Referrals up in 2012

Statistics show referrals to child protection services were up by a quarter in 2012. With a greater reporting of child neglect, there are huge strains on services already under pressure.
As the Children First Bill is being finalised, neglect is found to be the most common form of abuse. Many children are deprived of the basic necessities of food, warmth and love.
New standards of child protection have been implemented, local social work teams are now subject to independent inspections.
The Taoiseach says the Constitution was changed to better take care of children and families.
