A report by Girlguiding found that half of seven to 11 year olds wear make-up and a growing number of girls are unhappy with the way they look.

The research involved nearly 1,300 respondents aged between seven and 21 and was conducted online under controlled conditions and also included face-to-face interviews.

Of those surveyed, 51% of girls aged between 14 and 16 were unhappy with their appearance and more 16 to 18 year olds feel less positive about life.

More than seven in ten 11 to 21 year olds claim that “pictures that ‘shame’ celebrities make them anxious about the way they look.” Unfortunately, with more and more people logging on to social media sites, online bullying has become widespread, and girls are more likely to deal with it on their own than confide in parents or another adult in authority.

Jo Swinson, Liberal Democrat’s under-secretary for women and equalities, is worried by the growing number unhappy with their appearance: “This trend is going the wrong way and should give us all cause for concern. That's why the government's Body Confidence Campaign has been working with the media, advertising, retail and fashion industries to encourage diversity and reduce the harmful effects of gender stereotyping and objectification."
