Private health insurers are to meet with a national infertility support group to discuss offering cover for IVF treatments.

At the moment, only one health insurer offers limited cover and while a tax rebate can be claimed, the financial strain on those seeking treatments is significant.

Helen Brown from the National Infertility Support and Information Group confirmed the meeting at the group’s national conference over the weekend. She also highlighted the need for people with medical cards to be covered for treatment. “There’s an awful lot of people – who are in the middle – who don’t have private health insurance and who aren’t entitled to medical cards.”

Ms Browne has also reiterated calls for the government to regulate fertility clinics.
