Almost 57,000 students will receive their Leaving Certificate results tomorrow. Here are the main things mums and their teens need to know:
  • Results will be available at most schools from 9am.
  • If you can’t make it to your school, results are available online or by phone (1530 716 016) from 12pm. Make sure you have your Personal Identification Number and examination number ready.
  • If you have any worries or questions, the annual National Parents Council helpline (1800 265 165) will run for three days from 14th August. This helpline is staffed by experts from the Institute of Guidance Counsellors.
  • The first round of CAO offers will be available online from 6am on Monday 19th August. The National Parents Council helpline will run for another three-day period from that day to facilitate any CAO queries.
  • Closing date for acceptance of first round CAO offers is 5:15pm on 26th August.
  • The second round of CAO offers will arrive by post on 29th August. Applicants who missed out on their first choice in Round One may be offered a higher preference course if a place is available regardless of whether or not they accepted an earlier offer.
  • The closing date for accepting Round Two offers is 5:15pm on 4th September.
  • If you or your teen feels a result was unfair, you can view the exam paper. You can register for this through your teen’s school. If you still feel the grade was too low after looking over the paper, you can appeal and results will be available by mid-October. If the appeal is successful, the CAO may make an offer to students who secured the required CAO points.
If your teen hasn’t secured their desired course, there are other options such as repeating the Leaving Cert, studying abroad or taking a longer academic route. There are plenty of alternatives for students to make it into their preferred area of study. Just remember to be supportive and help them figure out the best path for them.

Good Luck!
