Although the birth of a newborn usually calls for a celebration, a sudden crash in hormone levels can prevent mums from doing so.

A recent report found that nearly two thirds of women struggle to cope with the changes in their lives and admit to feeling stressed and depressed after welcoming their newborn.

Carried out by the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) and Netmums, the study suggests that more mental health care is needed for mums who feel they may have the baby blues.

This includes ensuring that midwives are qualified to deal with difficulties new mums are faced with, as well as establishing units to care for mums with mental health issues. Nearly three quarters of depressed mums don’t even seek any medical help, which could be because they feel they may look like ‘bad mothers.’

But, since the average woman usually doesn’t enjoy being a mum until their little one is six months old, a bit of stress during the early days of mother hood is perfectly normal. After all, we’re only human.
