Creches and preschool services will face new sanctions under legislation approved by Cabinet.

Measures will include new powers for inspectors, an increase in fines and closure orders for crèches that fail to comply.

Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald told the Irish Times that the new legislation will “give preschool inspectors greater flexibility to act speedily.”

These new measures come as it was announced that parents of children attending crèches featured in RTE’s Prime Time are taking legal action against the facilities. Action may also be taken against the HSE for failure to act when they were made aware of RTE’s footage.

What do you think? Did Prime Time’s investigation make you nervous about your childcare facility? Will new legislation put your mind at ease?
