Poll shows the majority of Irish voters support same-sex marriage

While there has been an ongoing debate on whether or not homosexual couples should be allowed to marry, the results of a recent Red C poll showed that the majority of Irish people think same-sex marriage should be allowed in Ireland.

 

In a recent survey, the results showed that over three quarters of Irish voters support same-sex marriage.

 

Chairperson of the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (GLEN), Kieran Rose, said: “The poll confirms the openness of Irish people and their support for further critically important progress to achieving equality for lesbian and gay people”.

 

The Government will issue a draft proposal looking at a possible change to the constitution in relation to same-sex couples in Ireland.

 

But, while support is highest among women under 44, Labour supporters and Dubliners, gay marriage proposal is less favored by Fine Gael and Fianna Fail voters.

 

About one in three Fine Gael and Fianna Fail supporters say that they would not back such plans, so only time will tell how this will roll out.
