Real life stories from Mount Carmel: Gillian Davis, pregnancy scare

I gave birth to my beautiful daughter Julia on New Year’s Day 2012 in Mount Carmel Hospital. I can’t speak highly enough of the care and attention I received throughout my pregnancy.  I sailed through the first 3 months without a whiff of morning sickness but as I entered the 13th week, something didn’t feel right and a pain in my lower right side, which I originally put down to the womb expanding, became increasingly stronger.  With no obvious signs of a miscarriage, I went to my GP for some reassurance.  I don’t think I’ll ever forget that morning and the look on my GPs face as she examined me which said it all. There was definitely something wrong.  A few phone calls later and Dr. Dockery had me admitted to the ward for further tests.  A scan revealed I had an abscess on my appendix and it was more severe than they first thought. Within hours I was being operated on and the following days were critical.

It was at this very moment that I knew I had made the right decision in choosing Mount Carmel Hoapital. The care I received from the nurses, in particular Deirdre, the house doctors and my Consultant, was second to none. The rest of the pregnancy went by without incident and as I entered the ward again for the final leg of the journey, there was a real feeling of calmness. The 2 midwives present on the day were absolutely brilliant and extremely supportive; I knew I was in capable hands. Many people questioned my choice of maternity hospital but my gut feeling was Mount Carmel Hospital as I wanted my first experience of child birth to be remembered for all the right reasons. For me, Mount Carmel will be the number one choice every time.
