Eight weeks: The triplets finally come home

Ok, so this is about the third or fourth attempt to write my update, because life has changed quite a bit since the last one. I am delighted to say that the babies are home! Here's what happened...

So, the week leading into their seventh week was productive for the bottle feeding. Elliot progressed to two bottles in a row quite quickly, then three in a row by Tuesday, and by Wednesday it was looking like he would be home by the weekend. Róisín, who has always taken her bottles well, was moved to two and three bottles in a row, and when I came in to the hospital on Thursday, both Elliot and Róisín had had the tubes to their tummies removed. They looked so beautiful without the tubes and tape across their faces, it was so lovely to see. I was so excited to get the answer from the consultant that we could take both of them home that Friday. Rebecca was taking one tube to two bottles, and they earmarked the end of the weekend or early next week, as she was not ready for full bottles yet.

I got their Moses baskets ready the night before, for our bedroom, and got a travel cot ready too, for downstairs. I had put the little cuddly toys into each Moses basket and, as Rebecca was staying in hospital a bit longer, I took her cuddly toy into the hospital. However, when I got into the hospital on the Friday with the intention of taking two of them home and having to leave Rebecca behind, I was delighted to see that she, too, had her tubes removed; I knew it would not be long before we would welcome her home too. I tried to get an answer that day as to whether we could bring her home on Saturday, but the consultant was in his clinic, so I could not ask. We had to wait until Saturday afternoon to get confirmation, but I just hoped this would be the case.

So, Friday afternoon, after I had done their usual two feeds in hospital, Conor arrived. We took some family photos and took two of them off home. I was sad to be leaving Rebecca but knew a night with two was probably good to settle us in gently to this new life. We went off with two of our three babies in our Maxi Cosi car seats; they are ideal as they’re so snug and safe inside, and easy to buckle up, too. We are really delighted with them, as all three fit neatly across the back seat of the car - not an easy feat - and they also fit into our buggy perfectly.

We settled in well at home that first day, with both of them nice and relaxed, sleeping so well that I even made a shepherd's pie for the freezer and a spaghetti bolognese for dinner! At bedtime, we did the feeds and put them up to bed in our room. However, their mooching noises as they tried to settle in their new beds made us realise that my plan of having them all in our room was not quite going to work. I ended up coming downstairs with both of them and rested on the couch between feeds. As I am sure you can imagine, I got little sleep; but I was on a bit of a high so it did not seem too much of an issue - for that night anyway!

On Saturday, we did not get the go-ahead to pick Rebecca up until 6pm, so during the day- when my brother was staying - I got some extra sleep. My brother and husband did the feeds, and we caught up on some jobs about the house. Conor then went to pick up Rebecca late that afternoon, and it was so exciting to get her home.

After 10 weeks of being in the hospital - as an inpatient, or visiting the babies in The Coombe - we were finally going to be together at home as a family. This long awaited special day, 11th September 2015, was to be relished - just the five of us, feeling blessed, with our family now complete and all at home, safe and sound. This day marked the start of our family life together with triplets!
