At one point or another most of us have jokingly told our children that as soon as they are old enough they’ll be packing their bags and moving out. I have definitely said this to my little girl on more than one occasion, but deep down I know that the minute she decides to leave the nest my heart will break. I'm not sure why I started contemplating on her eventually leaving the family home...

I have a friend who pretty much refuses to chat about her children. While she worships the ground they walk on, she just doesn’t feel their achievements or progress are appropriate topics of conversation when chatting with another adult, unless of course, it's her partner. “Parents only ask you about your own kids, so they can start boasting about theirs,” she told me over a glass of...

Like most mums, I go through ups and downs when it comes to my child. While the love is unconditional, the enthusiasm for family life is not always consistent. Some weeks I’m on top of things and manage to juggle work responsibilities, family commitments and mother/daughter time with next to no trouble, but then there are the other times. While I wish I could say that work takes a back seat or...

Myself and my husband decided to treat ourselves this past weekend. We reserved a table in our favourite (pre-kids) restaurant, we got dressed up and we organised a babysitter. Delighted with ourselves, we swung out of the house, hopped into a taxi and held hands as we anticipated out first proper date night in eight months. And then we spent three and a half hours talking about our children. We...

I’m a date person. I love remembering dates for birthdays, milestones and anniversaries, and this week marked the anniversary of when I met my husband 11 years ago. I can’t help but look back on that day and cringe, while also feeling so lucky! I was off work for a couple of weeks after having a minor surgery and was spending time at my dad’s to recover. After a few days I found myself going...

Had my 20-week scan this week and it was just so amazing to see all the babies' limbs so clearly. The identical twins (Baby 1 and Baby 2) are in my lower tummy and the singleton (Baby 3) is above them so it is nice to know roughly where they are. It is strange to think the consultant at The Coombe knows what we are having, while we've decided to keep it as a surprise. She really is...

It’s nearing the end of the school year, which means it’s time, once more, for Sports Day all around the country. For many children this is a welcome occasion and for many others it is a day they dread. Non-sports-orientated children feel the competitiveness of this day and are sometimes embarrassed by running in races and coming in last or near last. However it is also a day for all us mums...

Recently I found myself asking if my five-year-old daughter’s after-school life is getting too busy. To be honest, I’m frazzled enough as it is, trying to combine working on a small start-up along with being a mum. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a tiger mother who enrols her child in language classes and expects her to be fluent in three languages by the time she’s nine. I am so not that...

My eldest son graduated from school this week. My eldest son graduated from school this week. No, it doesn't matter how many times I write or say those words, I just cannot get my head around the fact that my first baby is about to leave his uniform balled up on the floor for the last time. His school days are behind him forever. There was a special Mass in the school on Tuesday night, and I...

I was listening to the radio the other day when one of those segments came on where an expert fields questions from parents and tells them How To Cope. I like these segments; if it’s a parenting problem I don’t have then I feel sympathetic smugness, and if they have one of my problems then I can garner a bit of advice. This time, crime and punishment of the toddler variety was discussed...
