As many experienced mums will agree, the term "baby weight" can be as misleading as the term morning sickness. Just as morning sickness can plague a pregnant woman at all hours of the day, baby weight tends to hang on to Mum long after the baby's evolved to a toddler, preschooler, and beyond. And there's a reason for that: 1. You’re doing the wrong workout Any tired, new mum is lucky...

Parenthood teaches us to experience multiple opposing emotions on a daily basis at dangerously high levels. Take fear; f ear comes into its own once you become a parent. Who else wakes up seven times an hour to check on the breathing of a perfectly healthy human other than a new parent? Who else can spend an hour in intense conversation on the terror of choking hazards, on the danger of the...

You've just brought your newborn home from the hospital. Swaddled and wrapped in blankets; having a good old sniff of their head - bliss. Congratulations, you are now the proud owner of a beautiful, wrinkly little cherub. You put her down and she's there in her moses basket, car seat or bouncer, exactly in eye shot. Life couldn't get any better. The first birthday is celebrated, and...

A lot has been happening in our little corner of the world recently. We’ve had birthday celebrations, primary school acceptances and transitions from cot to bed. It’s all systems go, really. But to be fair, when isn’t it? To start with, I (for the first time) had to organise and arrange a ‘proper’ kids' birthday party – you know, the kind that involves booking a soft play area...

The sky is a colour usually seen only in holiday brochures, topless lads are turning pink, and sales of 99s are flying. Yes, it is exam season. The weather has obliged us by putting on a magnificent display, just as those who should be enjoying it most are stuck inside panicking over past exam questions. Well, I suppose some of them are. We have the Junior Cert this year. I almost said “only...

My darling girl, It has come to my attention that, at a mere five years of age, you are struggling with something that I truly wish that you could have escaped. As you tell me stories about school, I see it in your eyes, mirroring the expression that is so often in mine. Worries about friendships and getting into trouble all pour out - troubles that seem insurmountable in your little world. I hear...

This week I headed off to the shops alone during school time. Eager with anticipation - could I feed a hungry house of 8 again this week? As the trolley filled fast and furious I was amazed how quickly I had become accustomed to shopping in Lidl. This week I was not seeking out items but quite literally the items were presenting themselves and jumping into my trolley. This week I bought an array...

Great excitement in Lidl this week – I discovered an Italian range called “Italiamo” which I hadn’t noticed before and it’s absolutely gorgeous! I got a little carried away... I couldn’t resist. They do everything from black olive tapenade and sundried tomatoes to antipasti, amaretti biscuits and Italian coffee. It all looked very luxurious. I picked up some pasta: fettuccine, lasagne...

We were away for the weekend and are going to be away again so didn’t need too much on the food front this week compared to normal. I did pick up some more of the delish Striploin Steaks which (if we can get 5 minutes without rain) I’ll BBQ again. I also picked up a pack of Beef Quarter pounders to try and at €2.89 for 4 these are excellent value. My children love chicken nuggets which I...

Another surprise shop this week as I had a lot to get and managed to get everything I needed but the total came in at €80, that's around €60 less expensive than my normal shop which is amazing! The weather took a turn for the worst this week so instead of BBQs, we planned a heart-warming Balti curry for the weekend. We added carrots, broccoli, onions, chicken and garlic along with the...
